1) invest in some good software like cakewalk’s pyro 5
2) go to someplace like radio shack and tell them you would like to send your stereo audio output into your computers audio input jack (line in, aux, microphone hole)
they should sell you male to male cables that go from the large jack on the stereo end to the small micro jack for the computer end. (its the same cable & jack equipment used for recording from a stereo player to a cassete deck)
3) if you don’t have one invest in a cd burner. so you don’t lose your personal music library if your computer crashes.

I’m not sure vinyl copies of new material are even being made anymore. As for older stuff, ask your friends if they still have any old records or try local flea markets. You might also check your phonebook for music stores that deal in used CD’s and LP’s – many people still collect vinyl either for a favorite band or album artwork. Depending on the group, many can be had fairly cheaply. Good Luck!

I’m selling some vinyl records on craigslist, and someone in Kansas is buying one. I live in California. What’s the best way to mail it to ensure it’s not damaged (but isn’t too expensive)
Find a large cardboard box (check at the grocery store) with heavy (not thin) cardboard.
This will need to be the height of the album (12" I assume) and double the width (or 24") along two sides of the box.
What you’re trying to make is a cardboard "sleeve" into which the album jacket will fit.
Cut down the box so 1/2 of the sleeve covers the album; then fold the cardboard so the second half covers the other side.
Put inside (before taping) a paper identifying yourself, and the recipient, just in case there is an exterior label mishap.
You should now have a sleeve, open on 3 sides: tape those open sides firmly with a quality, 2" wide clear Scotch brand "Mailing tape".
Don’t use nylon re-enforced tape: shipping companies won’t accept it because it jams up their machinery.
Print plainly the sender & receiver on the outside, and this advisory:
"Fragile: Please throw underhand."
Insure it, just in case they can’t read English.
Send.

I have been told that to clean vinyl records it’s as easy as washing them in soapy(detergent) and presumably rinsing them and drying them afterwards
I was told by a DJ many years ago that to clean records you should wash them in dishwashing detergent. Do not use a cloth, simply dip them through the detergent several times then rinse with clean water . To dry them, put a pencil through the hole in the centre and spin the record to flick the water off. DO NOT use a cloth as this may scratch. I never tried it myself as I had cassettes, not records.

What is the best Software for transfering ols vinyl records to CD? and what hardware is needed?
I use LP Recorder and LP Ripper to record/edit my .WAV files from LPs. Those are not free utilities. Audacity, which is free, will also perform that task just fine, though it is not as easy to use for that purpose. You can burn .WAV files to CD Audio with Windows Media Player, which is free.
You’ll need a turntable, receiver, patch-cord, and a sound-card with a line-in capability. The patch-cord is the red/white common stereo-cord on one end, and a 1/8" phono plug on the other. Radio Shack has them.
If your turntable is built in to the stereo, you can bypass the need for a receiver by using the line-out plugs, or headphone jack on the unit.
There are newer turntables that plug directly into the computer via USB. The models I have looked at come with Audacity.

a guy i like is really into vinyl records. he has tons but cant find a7x and i want to buy it for him. where would i be able to purchase them?
well you can definitely get that online. i didn’t see it on amazon or on the band’s website but here’s some on ebay: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p0.m38.l1313&_nkw=avenged+sevenfold+vinyl&_sacat=See-All-Categories
you can also try local music stores. try one that’s not a chain or one that deals with used music.

Will vinyl records become the dominant format again?
digital is the going to be the king here in a couple years….i am already seeing memory stick "CD’s" in stores. unless they can compress the size of them into something CD size or smaller, and make them portable, and…….nah, forget it, digital is on the rise…CD’s are on their way out. and vinyl has been gone for a long time and wont be back.

I want to transfer old recorded 90 minute musical tapes and old vinyl records to a CD format so I can then transfer to I-Pod or MP3.
Can anyone tell me how to proceed?
(I note that the other answer here links to a question where my answer has already been selected as best answer, so I guess you have seen this, but nonetheless…it’s only right that I should get the chance to submit an answer…)
You will need to connect your cassette player to your PC soundcard, then play the cassette whilst recording on your PC. A step-by-step guide is available at:
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/diy
The recording software is the key, there are some free software downloads available at:
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/downloads.php
I have used ‘Magix Audio Cleaning Lab’ and ‘Audacity’ – Audacity is particularly popular since it is free! (requires additional ‘lame-enc.dll’ file for MP3 conversion)
If you record to WAV format, expect file sizes of around 10MB per minute, or 1MB per minute for MP3 (at 128kbps).
Once you have your digital versions of the recording on your PC, simply burn them on to a CD (Nero burning software or similar..). If you use Magix Audio Cleaning, the software will burn an audio CD for you without needing additional software (assuming you have a CD writing drive of course!)
You can also download a free PDF version of the step-by–step guide from the download page mentioned above, the guide is complete with diagrams and screen-shots.
Hope this helps

Looking for newly released vinyl at the lowest price.
I saw this website getting popular www.buyvinyls.com .
It searches Ebay and provides the most relevant results.
It can even provide results sorted by bid counts so popular items are displayed first. Which is a good tool if you want to know what are the popular items.
http://www.buyvinyls.com/?CatID=all&Keywords=michael+jackson&ItemSort=BidCount&SortOrder=Descending&ItemType=&PriceMinValue=&PriceMaxValue=&sitecode=US
Or you can try Amazon here http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26redirect%3Dtrue%26ref%255F%3Dsr%255Fnr%255Fp%255Fn%255Fbinding%255Fbrowse-b%255F5%26bbn%3D5174%26qid%3D1256367996%26rnid%3D387643011%26rh%3Dn%253A5174%252Cn%253A%2521301668%252Cp%255Fn%255Fbinding%255Fbrowse-bin%253A387647011&tag=blitzyans-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
