old vinyl records
my grandfather left my mother very old records, like from 1891 and early 1900 jazz records. does anyone know how how much they could be worth or where i could find out?
Unfortunately only very specific titles are really worth anything and they usually have to be first issue. I know this because when my dad died he had hundreds of old jazz and classical records and none of them were worth anything.
You could look up specific titles on ebay but that might be tedious. What I did was I cataloged all of the titles I had along with condition of each and any identifying numbers that appeared on the labels and emailed the list to local vintage record stores. (have someone read the information off the records to you while you type it..it’ll go a lot faster that way).
All three of them got back to me with the same response…"not interested"
Oh, and be extra careful with those record…if they’re that old, they’re not really vinyl…they’re made of shellac which can chip if mishandled and shatter if dropped.

I’ve found some How-Tos on making bowls for decoration, but I’m not sure just a plain old record would stand up to having cigarettes put out on it, plus how could I plug up the hole & also not wreck the label on the record if I wanted to keep it intact? This isn’t an necessity but it’d be nice. Thank in advance!
First, DON’T use vinyl records for cigarettes… the glowing end is way too hot and will burn the plastic (the resulting fumes wouldn’t be very good for lungs either).
You could put a small glass, ceramic, or metal bowl or plate or something similar into the bottom of the vinyl bowl though –the part where the cig would be extinguished, etc.
Doing that would make the bottom of the bowl flat, but if you want to cover the hole visually (if not using as an ashtray especially), you could just glue a button, coin, or other flat-sh shape over the hole. Or you could fill the hole with an air-dry clay, or use a polymer clay. If you use a polymer clay, make the shape you want in the hole, then remove it and bake, and glue it back in (if the clay isn’t firm enough to remove witthout distorting it, put the whole bowl in the frig or freezer for awhile to stiffen the clay up a bit).
P.S.
If you want a bit more info on making bowls, etc., from vinyl records, check out the "SLUMPING" subcategory (under Melting/etc Plastics) on this page at my site:

Yesteryear, at the back of UP. It’s in Teacher’s Village area near C.P. Garcia Ave.
Tiendesitas also has vinyl records, you’ll just have to find the stall, I’ve seen it before.

I have found a lot of old rare 78 lps and 10inch lps, plus some rare lps. And not into collesting so want to place up for auctions but want to know just what I have first.
Take them to an antiques store or a place that sells old records.

Thrift stores and record stores (if there are any anymore). I know it’s not 50’s albums but I’ve found albums from acdc, santana, creedence clearwater revival, the guess who, kiss, heart and bands like that. I’ve been looking for 50’s rock albums from people like Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley but no luck.

I bought some 33’s and 45’s from an auction, and most of them are in really good condition although none of them have sleeves. But one stack was deteriorated from the label going outward. What would make a vinyl record deteriorate like that?
Heat is the most common enemy of vinyl followed closely by the way they are stored. The best way to keep them is on edge, not stacked like pancakes. You can use white parchment paper and make your own sleeves.

I have a really good collection of vinyl records. But I am relocating and can’t take everything with me. I managed to find places to sell my stuff but I have no clue where to sell my vinyl records. Please advise.
Thank you.
A ‘good’ collection is usually in the eye of the beholder. I have a ton of 70/80’s record in perfect condition and they aren’t worth what they originally sold for back then. Anyway, if you want the best price for them you’ll probably have to sell them yourself on ebay or other online auction. A record dealer (like myself) will only want to pay rock-bottom prices, or a flat fee for a bulk of records. They still have to make a profit. Depending on how much time you have before you move, an auction might be a better idea. One thing to keep in mind that condition is EVERYTHING to any collector, no matter how rare the item is. If you need help evaluating condition and grading your records the free-to-read articles below may help get you started.

Yes… There are a number of publications and websites that can help understand the value… Before you sell to anyone…. Some vinyl is quite collectable… You can even go to ebay with some of the titles and reference a least a few of them.
