Vinyl Records are Back!

I am having a clearout (in Twickenham) and have a bunch of stuff to get rid of. Lots of book, lots of old vinyl records – mostly in average condition, quite a few bits of household items, old computer equipment, old wooden wine boxes etc, etc. Without spending too much effort, how can I get the best price for all this stuff, particularly the books because they’re mostly in good condition and there’s a lot of them.

eBay is probably your best bet as there will hopefully be people who are looking for the specific items you have. If there are 2 or more people that want your things then hopefully it will result in a bidding war ultimately getting you the best price.

Another avenue may be for you to spend some time researching the books, records and other bits that you have online to find out if any of them are rare and collectors items. If this is the case then a specialist auction house may be a better bet.

I have a Direct Drive Technics sl-1200mk2 turntable, which takes vinyl records. Now, I can buy records from places such as Guitar Center for scratching, and those are blank records i believe. Now, my grandfather has some old 78 records with music on them; can I use those or will they not work cause they have music on it?

Just thought I ask because Half Price Books have been raising their prices of vinyl records over the last two years.

Because people are starting to realize that records rule and supply was not prepared to keep up for the future.

I have a Paul McCartney RAM album and I was thinking maybe I should get more. I just started to listen to the 70’s and 60’s songs like Beatles and Rolling Stones. They aren’t that expensive on ebay so I thought, "Why Not?". But I don’t know if its really that convenient but I do like the sound of it a lot. So thats the question Vinyl records or iTunes. If you can give an unbiased opinion on both. Thanks!

Vinyl as it will only gain in value for bands such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
If you can get them cheap go for it! There is something very satisfying about owning a large vinyl record collection.

9 or 10 bucks for a new release but you could find the occasional bargain.

I have been told that the covers of LP/Vinyl records smell. I was wondering hoe to make the smell go away?

I want to hang vinyl records on my wall, but I don’t want to frame them. Not the case, just the record. I have popcorn walls and I want to attach them without having a million holes or damaging the wall much. Any ideas? Thanks

There are devices designed to hold and display plates. They have a central hanger and multiple, spring-loaded "hooks" that go over the edge of the plate. They should work on records, too.

you’re going to have to check out your local record stores for some 7" of newer songs. Lots of great older songs can be found on their albums, but for newer songs you are going to have to either order a special DJ promo copy or track down a single version of the song.

Most newer bands will issue their singles on vinyl for DJs, but not full albums.

I’ve forgotten the name of the type of vinyl records that have ‘hidden tracks’ on them- as in, the record has two sets of grooves on each side, each has a different set of tracks, and where you put the needle on the LP determines which set of tracks is played… I think they have four sets of tracks for the two sides in total. Does anyone know the name of this type of record? I read about them a while ago

The only thing I can think of that fits that description is locked groove records. Is that what you mean?

A friend recently told me he’d send me some vinyl records from Dubai for my birthday. When they didn’t show up, he went to the post office where they told him they’d thrown them away because vinyl records are illegal to own in the UAE because they are commonly used to hide drugs in them.

What I wonder is if my friend is lying through his teeth, or if he’s telling the truth and vinyl is illegal in Dubai?

I lived in Dubai and I’ve never heard such rubbish.
How can you hide drugs in a piece of vinyl?
I would think he either never posted them,or someone at the post office kept them.
